Equipment 101: Pro Scooter Decks

Let's talk decks! Whether you want a deck for your custom pro scooter, or you are comparing decks on a complete, there are a few things to keep in mind when selecting a scooter deck.

Deck Size

The deck is the part of the pro scooter that the rider stands on. Pro scooter decks typically come in 4"- 4 1/2" wide and 19" -21" long. The rider's feet should fit comfortably on the deck, for instance bigger feet and/ or larger shoes will want a wider deck. A smaller rider with smaller feet will want a deck that fits his/ her foot size. A deck that is too large for the rider can inhibit tricks and even lead to uncomfortable foot and ankle bruising.

Deck Weight

Decks can weigh in anywhere from 2 - 4 pounds, almost 1/2 the weight of a complete scooter. A lightweight deck may be best for a younger, smaller rider. Lighter weight decks are also preferred by riders focused on technical tricks. A heavier deck can work with a larger rider, and provide a more solid, steady feel for riders who want a smooth ride.

Type of Riding

Street Riders often prefer longer decks for a more comfortable ride and flow. Longer decks better for ledges and rails and offer more foot room for better balance. A smaller deck will hug the feet for better control when off the streets.
